KNOW HOW

The Blockprint Technique

The Blockprint: Celebrating the Handmade & the Perfectly Imperfect

A privileged partner since the beginning of the Bindi Atelier adventure, we work with India for its textile expertise, unique craftsmanship, and traditional techniques such as the art of "Blockprinting."

This ancestral know-how consists of printing fabric using hand-engraved exotic wood stamps.

This Indian craft, originating from Rajasthan, is at the heart of Bindi Atelier's DNA and gives the fabrics a unique and recognizable character.

From inspiration to drawing

Since 2017, we've been committed to creating unique and exclusive designs developed in-house.

It all begins with a design drawn by our creative teams, inspired by a trip, an image, or a memory. First, a sketch, then a more elaborate version that takes shape over the months.

Rethinking, refining, and adapting the design to the specificities of printing and the woodblock printing technique.

From sketch to engraved blocks

Once the design is drawn, we entrust it to the "block master," who is responsible for hand-engraving all the wooden stamps that make up the pattern.

Each color is represented by a unique block, and it sometimes takes up to 100 pieces of wood to create a single design.

Once the stamps are engraved, they rest in an oil bath for a week to treat the exotic wood and ensure flawless printing and perfect color retention on the block.

The power of colors

We work with a master dyer to translate the beautiful colors we imagine onto fabric.

For each collection we create, we test hundreds of color combinations in the workshop to find the perfect match that we fall in love with.

Each shade is then archived in our large color book, a precious work that traces all the Bindi Atelier designs created over the years.

All our dyes are created using Azo-free pigments, meaning they are kind to the skin, and are printed on all-natural fabrics such as cotton, wool, or silk.

The pattern comes to life & the magic happens

Finally, the artisan responsible for the printing meticulously applies the successive wooden blocks to the fabric, repeating their movements with patience and precision.

Each color is printed one after the other on long printing tables, centimeter by centimeter.

This fascinating step is the culmination of many months of work, and the magic continues to work after all these years!

Time for drying

Once the fabrics are hand-printed, they are transported outside Jaipur, into the wilderness, where they are treated and dried.

The fabrics are rinsed to "fix" the colors, then air-dried for several hours under the Rajasthan sun before returning to the garment factories.
